My name is Bill Irwin and I am originally from Va Beach, VA. My father owned a drug store, Irwin’s Pharmacy, on Indian River Road in Chesapeake. Both of my parents (deceased) loved to dance and frequently did so at The Cavalier Beach Club on the Virginia Beach oceanfront. I worked in IT for Dominion Virginia Power, and after 30 years took an early retirement. I have one son who lives with his wife in Raleigh, NC, an older sister who lives with her husband in Charlottesville, a younger sister who lives in Martinsburg, WV, and a younger brother who lives in Newport News.
I am 64 years old, am an avid Pickleball enthusiast, love to hike, and have been dancing for about 20 years. Early in my dancing career I became interested in DJ’ing for the Ballroom dance community. Although I am best known as a Ballroom DJ and social dance instructor, I am currently working on expanding my DJ’ing into Latin, West Coast Swing, and Club venues.
My teaching career began after people saw my (then) wife and I practicing in a windowed room at a local YMCA. They wanted to know if dance classes were going to be offered, and after one of the directors came to us and said there were several people interested, we agreed to teach some beginner Ballroom classes there. In 2008 an opportunity to purchase a dance studio came up, and shortly afterwards I became one of the proud owners of The Dance Space in Richmond.
I am a social dance instructor and have taught many group and private lessons. I believe that what people like about my style of teaching is that I make the classes fun, and I give a lot in an hour class. My favorite dances are Bachata, West Coast Swing, Night Club Two Step, and a dance I call “Bill’s Social Foxtrot”.
I am honored to have been asked to participate in Dancing With The Williamsburg Stars, and will do all I can to make my star shine bright on the dance floor.
