Glenn Lavender is the founder/owner of Silver Hand Meadery – the first meadery in Williamsburg’s growing craft beverage industry.
After 12 years of recording and touring with award-winning Nashville-based band Downhere, and two years of leading music and planning services for the Williamsburg Community Chapel, Glenn was ready for a new challenge. During his years of traveling with the band, Glenn developed a keen interest in honey bees and their importance in sustaining the ecosystem. That lead him to discover mead, which had been well chronicled in the writings of favorite author Stephen Lawhead, who penned the novel, The Silver Hand. Many years and home-made batches later, Glenn and his summer camp sweetheart, Sherri, decided to open Silver Hand Meadery.
Mead is one of the most historic fermented drinks found on Earth. It has the creativity of craft beer and the elegance of wine, but is in a category all its own. Silver Hand Meads are created by fermenting unique varietal honeys, with additional herbs, spices, and fruits added to create unique flavors.
Now, working side by side with his wife, Sherri, Glenn has honed his mead-making craft, highlighted by winning two silver medals at the 2017 Virginia Governor’s Cup as well as two awards at the world’s largest mead competition “The Mazer Cup” in 2015. Since opening Silver Hand Meadery in 2015, Glenn and his team have introduced thousands of Williamsburg visitors and locals alike to this historic beverage, and the world of varietal honey. All the while helping to save the world, one bee at a time!
Glenn and Sherri live in Williamsburg where they enjoy raising their three sons.
